Life After: Post-Career Insights from Wells Thompson
With retirement being one of the only certainties in professional sports, it is important for athletes to think about and plan for the long term. This is often easier said than done. Professional athletes are gifted with a profound level of focus and a single-mindedness in pursuit of excellence. This is what elevates them to the sport’s highest level, but it is also what sometimes prevents them from considering their life after the game.
Wells Thompson, who played for the New England Revolution, Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire over a successful seven-year MLS career, has first-hand insight into the challenges of transitioning from the rigors of professional sports to the uncertainties of retirement. Thanks to The Soccer Tour, we are sharing a video interview with Thompson where he opens up about the difficulties he has had to cope with through this enormous change in his life. His story is not the story of every athlete, but it is an all too common theme and worth understanding.
